Things You Didn’t Know About Watermelon

It has more lycopene than raw tomatoes

In just one cup, watermelon has 1.5 times the stuff than a large fresh tomato, 6 milligrams compared to 4 milligrams, according to the USDA. That matters because lycopene is thought to act as a super antioxidant, stopping free radicals from damaging your cells and messing with your immune system. Some research even suggests that lycopene, typically found in red fruits and vegetables, may help fight heart disease and several types of cancer.

The juice may relieve muscle soreness

A Spanish study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that drinking watermelon juice can actually be quite soothing after a grueling workout. Athletes who consumed a little more than 16 ounces an hour before exercise had less muscle soreness and a lower heart rate within a day. That may be because watermelon contains a natural substance called citrulline that’s been tied to improved artery function and lower blood pressure. In fact, its ability to relax the blood vessels led Texas A&M University researchers to say watermelon has Viagra-like effects. But you’ll need to look beyond the pink flesh if you really want to load up on citrulline—it’s concentrated most in the rind. If that’s not your thing, you can always save it for pickling or preserving later, Sass says.

It’s a fruit AND a vegetable

Talk about an overachiever. Like most fruits, watermelon is the product of a seed-producing plant and has a signature sweet taste. But it can be traced back to the squash, pumpkin, and cucumber family known as Cucurbitaceae. Remember how you can eat the rind? The dual nature of watermelon makes it all edible, so there’s no excuse to leave any part behind.

It’s packed with, well, water

Now this is a food with some serious hydration power. Watermelon is 91.5% water, according to the USDA. That’s a big deal seeing as how being dehydrated is bad for your health. A study published in The Journal of Nutrition found that women with even mild dehydration experienced headaches, poor concentration, fatigue, and worse moods. More reason to whip up some watermelon recipes, stat.

There’s a yellow variety

It’s hard to believe there’s a watermelon that’s NOT pink on the inside, but there’s another variety, known as Yellow Crimson, has a sunny interior and the flesh has a sweeter, honey-like taste. Thing is, the two are nearly identical on the outside, so unless you’re reading the signs at your grocery store or farmers’ market, it can be hard to tell which is which. If you want the regular pink watermelon, ask for a Crimson Sweet.

Add this healthy, delicious fruit to you water and enjoy a Fruit Infused Water in your Infuser Water Bottle !

Fat Burning Foods: #Fitness

Here are 5 Fat burning food you should know about:

1. Broccoli- my favorite vegetable actually burns more calories being digested in your body than it contains, so everytime you eat brocolli, you are losing weight. Broccoli is also a cancer-fighter, so stock up on this nutritious veggie! I eat broccoli as a food to lose weight every day, with a bit of salt, and sometimes some olive oil (a healthy fat) and maybe a bit of lemon juice sprinkled on. It’s probably the tastiest fat burning food (celery is another fat burning food that burns more calories than it contains, but since I don’t really like the taste it’s not on this recommended list).

2. Lemon- Drink water to lose weight. Ok, no big secret there (drinking water makes your body metabolism work optimally). Want to really kick start your weight loss? Drink water with fresh lemon juice, and you’ll find that even if you don’t diet, you’ll lose weight. Why? It may be because lemon acts as a surfactant (cuts the grease- housewives who clean with natural products such as lemon know this already), but lemon juice washes away fat residue along your digestive tract that was waiting to be digested and incorporated into your body. It’s the best fat detox trick, but it must be fresh lemon juice. Cut open a lemon and squeeze it into each glass of water.

3. Lettuce- Did you know what eating a salad before each meal will not only fill you up so that you don’t pig out on the main meal, but lettuce is another fat burning food- few calories, lots of metabolic burning to get it digested. I love salad, so this one is awesome for me. If you like something tasty in your salad, you can add the next group of foods to lose weight.

4. Grilled chicken and hard-boiled eggs contain protein, which prevents the spikes in blood sugar that lead to hunger pangs. Protein fat burning foods make you feel fuller sooner, are very healthy, necessary to build muscle, are low in fat (one or two eggs is relatively low in fat, even if you eat the yolk, considering how full it makes you feel and all the vitamins and amino acids it contains). A salad with grilled chicken or sliced hard-boiled eggs for lunch is the ultimate lunch food to lose weight.

5. Green tea- of course there was going to be another beverage- being hydrated is important when you are trying to lose weight. Green tea contains catechins (more cancer-fighting antioxidants) that speed up metabolism and fat burning. Green tea tastes great, and has a slew of health benefits- that green tea is a drink to lose weight and tastes good too is a huge plus. When you are out with friends, don’t order a coffee, order a green tea.

Benefits of Honey Water !

The sugar in honey is a natural sugar, which provides a healthy source of calories. Not only that, it can help to ward off any sugary sweet beverage cravings you may have.

Drinking a warm glass of water with honey first thing in the morning helps to improve your digestive system. The antiseptic benefits of honey help relieve the acidity in your stomach while increasing the production of intestinal mucus. By using raw, local honey you help to acclimate your body to the pollens of your area.

Move over coffee  – honey and warm water are the new dream team for boosting energy.  The benefit to your energy levels by staying hydrated has all but been shouted from a rooftop, hot water with honey can help reduce the soreness and irritation of a sore throat.

Autumn, stay Hydrated

Well, summer is almost over and weather is easy to remember to stay hydrated during this hot season, we must not forget to stay hydrated during the Autumn too. We will still need our 8 cups of refreshing water every day. Here are some refreshing ways to stay hydrated during this Autumn and keep your brain focus on class.

As we have discussed before, disposable water bottles are not environment friendly so they are a terrible decision, long term speaking, to drink the water you need every week.

Recommendation: Get your own non-disposable water bottle and take it where you need to.
For people that doesn't like the taste of pure water, there's a great way to add flavor to the water, without using sugar. Using Infuser water bottles is an easy way to add the natural flavor to your beverage, you can do it daily without any additional effort and stay healthy, just put the fruit in the basket and add water.

Grapefruit Benefits

Rich in the Nutritional Powerhouse Vitamin C

Grapefruit is an excellent source of vitamin C, a vitamin that helps to support the immune system. Vitamin C-rich foods like grapefruit may help reduce cold symptoms or severity of cold symptoms; over 20 scientific studies have suggested that vitamin C is a cold-fighter. Vitamin C also prevents the free radical damage that triggers the inflammatory cascade, and is therefore also associated with reduced severity of inflammatory conditions, such as asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. As free radicals can oxidize cholesterol and lead to plaques that may rupture causing heart attacks or stroke, vitamin C is beneficial to promoting cardiovascular health. Owing to the multitude of vitamin C's health benefits, it is not surprising that research has shown that consumption of vegetables and fruits high in this nutrient is associated with a reduced risk of death from all causes including heart disease, stroke and cancer.

Insomnia: A simple glass of grapefruit juice, if drunk before going to bed, can promote healthy sleep and alleviate the irritating symptoms and repercussions of insomnia. This is due to the presence of tryptophan in grapefruits, the chemical we often associate with becoming sleepy after big meals. The levels of tryptophan in grapefruit juice lets us nod off peacefully to sleep.
Diabetes: Diabetic patients can safely eat grapefruit, because consuming grapefruit can reduce the level of starch in the body. If a patient is diabetic, intake of grapefruit can help them to regulate the flow of sugar in their body, effectively handling the disease. recent studies have shown this beneficial relationship between diabetes and grapefruits to be due to the flavonoid content of grapefruits, along with a number of other healthy benefits from those compounds.
