Things You Didn’t Know About Watermelon

It has more lycopene than raw tomatoes

In just one cup, watermelon has 1.5 times the stuff than a large fresh tomato, 6 milligrams compared to 4 milligrams, according to the USDA. That matters because lycopene is thought to act as a super antioxidant, stopping free radicals from damaging your cells and messing with your immune system. Some research even suggests that lycopene, typically found in red fruits and vegetables, may help fight heart disease and several types of cancer.

The juice may relieve muscle soreness

A Spanish study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that drinking watermelon juice can actually be quite soothing after a grueling workout. Athletes who consumed a little more than 16 ounces an hour before exercise had less muscle soreness and a lower heart rate within a day. That may be because watermelon contains a natural substance called citrulline that’s been tied to improved artery function and lower blood pressure. In fact, its ability to relax the blood vessels led Texas A&M University researchers to say watermelon has Viagra-like effects. But you’ll need to look beyond the pink flesh if you really want to load up on citrulline—it’s concentrated most in the rind. If that’s not your thing, you can always save it for pickling or preserving later, Sass says.

It’s a fruit AND a vegetable

Talk about an overachiever. Like most fruits, watermelon is the product of a seed-producing plant and has a signature sweet taste. But it can be traced back to the squash, pumpkin, and cucumber family known as Cucurbitaceae. Remember how you can eat the rind? The dual nature of watermelon makes it all edible, so there’s no excuse to leave any part behind.

It’s packed with, well, water

Now this is a food with some serious hydration power. Watermelon is 91.5% water, according to the USDA. That’s a big deal seeing as how being dehydrated is bad for your health. A study published in The Journal of Nutrition found that women with even mild dehydration experienced headaches, poor concentration, fatigue, and worse moods. More reason to whip up some watermelon recipes, stat.

There’s a yellow variety

It’s hard to believe there’s a watermelon that’s NOT pink on the inside, but there’s another variety, known as Yellow Crimson, has a sunny interior and the flesh has a sweeter, honey-like taste. Thing is, the two are nearly identical on the outside, so unless you’re reading the signs at your grocery store or farmers’ market, it can be hard to tell which is which. If you want the regular pink watermelon, ask for a Crimson Sweet.

What you didn't know about Water

In its purest form, it's odorless, nearly colorless and tasteless. It's in your body, the food you eat and the beverages you drink. You can travel on it or jump in it to cool off on hot summer days. All forms of life need it, and if they don't get enough of it, they die. What substance is more necessary to our existence than any other? Water.

The amount of fluid lost from the body is equal to the amount of fluid taken in. Water is necessary for all life on Earth. Humans can survive for 4–6 weeks without food, but for only a few days without water.

Profuse sweating can increase the need for electrolyte (salt) replacement. Water intoxication (which results in hypothermia), the process of consuming too much water too quickly, can be fatal.

  • Drinking water helps heartburn by diluting your stomach acid.
  • Some types of headaches can be relieved by drinking water.
  • Newborn babies are about 80% water, whereas adults are around 70% (any parent who has changed diapers all night can relate to just how much water is in a baby!).
  • Most healthy, average-weight people can drink up to 3 gallons of water a day without any ill effects.
  • There is such a thing as water poisoning, although it’s very rare – forcing yourself to drink too much water too fast (such as in a water-drinking contest) can result in hypothermia, which is when your electrolyte balance gets thrown off and your cells swell with water. When brain cells swell, hypothermia can be fatal.
  • Your body gets water from many of the foods you eat, especially fresh fruits and vegetables.

  • Water is a “universal solvent,” meaning it dissolves just about anything eventually. This means that water is nearly always carrying something along with it.
  • Earth’s atmosphere keeps water from escaping, so the same water that was around millions of years ago is still here. Talk about recycling!
  • The earth is composed of about 75% water (much like our bodies!), and of that water, approximately 97% is salt water.
  • Only about 1% of the world’s entire water supply is drinkable.
  • In 1832, the first municipal water filtration system opened in Paisley, Scotland.
  • Forty years later, in 1872, the first water filtration plant was built in Poughkeepsie, New York.
  • The earth’s total water mass is 326 million cubic miles.
  • In the United States, people use about 90 gallons of water each per day…much of this use is from flushing the toilet.
  • Water is fun, interesting, and everyone can relate to its use. Whether we lack it or enjoy an abundance of it, we've all experienced water.

Want your hair to grow faster ?

Just Hi-drate !

Yes, you heard right, Water!! It’s Cheap! It’s Easy to get! Most of all its Healthy! So why not make the most of it? Water hydrates the body and helps to regulate the circulatory system, which feeds the hair follicle, which then stimulates hair growth. If your hair roots are deficient in adequate water levels your tresses will eventually become dry, brittle and may stop growing.

Dehydration and Hair Growth:

Lack of water causes Dehydration, but very few people know that dehydration has a direct impact on hair growth. It is a common fact that our body is usually composed of 60-80% water. When it does not receive the adequate amount of water in order to maintain cell health and reproduction, it becomes dehydrated which directly impacts hair growth. You can intake fistfuls of hair vitamins and other hair growing supplements, but if you are not consuming apt amount of water to meet your body’s daily H2O requirements, the cells which are responsible for hair growth will not be able to grow and reproduce and as a result, your hair will become extremely dry and withered. This can stop the natural growth cycle of your hair.

Benefits of Water for Hair Growth:

There are various benefits of drinking water for hair growth. Those are as follows:
1. Water is the root source of energy for each and every cell of our body. It includes those cells too, that are responsible for hair growth and its health.
2. Water nurtures cells and provides them required hair vitamins.
3. It generates magnetic and electrical energy which is considered as a core power to sustain life. This is done through a process called hydrolysis.
4. The roots of the hair and our scalp have many energy-sensitive and photosensitive nerve endings. Water activates all these nerve endings and other sensors in our skin and scalp that enhances the natural vitality of hair roots.

DANGERS OF DEHYDRATION.

Hi- drate ! It’s important. Usually, your body balances the amount of water you consume with the amount of water eliminated.
Certain circumstances such as prolonged physical activity, high air temperatures, high fever, diarrhea, trauma and burns increase the amount of water lost. If you don’t replace that water, you become dehydrated.
You can become dehydrated by not consuming enough fluid from foods and beverages. These are conditions that also can make dehydration more likely:
  • Sweating during exercise that is not compensated by drinking extra fluids; exercise even in cold weather can cause sweating
  • Hot, humid weather
  • High altitude, which causes rapid breathing and increased urine output
  • Illnesses such as poorly controlled diabetes, and illnesses that cause vomiting, diarrhea, or fever
  • Pregnancy
  • Certain medications

Alcoholic drinks also can make you urinate more frequently, but, like caffeine, this increase is short-term and usually does not cause dehydration if you drink in moderation.

Symptoms of dehydration

  • A dry or sticky mouth, caused by too little saliva
  • Less urine than normal, or no urine for eight hours. Urine that is darker than usual may indicate dehydration; diet, medications, and vitamin supplements can also affect urine color.
  • Few or no tears
  • Sunken eyes
  • Dry, cool skin
  • Fast heart rate
  • In infants, a sunken fontanel, the soft spot on the top of the head, may mean dehydration.
  • Lethargy, irritability or fatigue
  • Listlessness or coma; this is a sign of severe dehydration.

3 Common Ways Nutrients Are Being Destroyed In Your Food...

1. Processing

The most commonly eaten and most processed food category is arguably the grains.

To begin this process, the highly nutritious, sprout-able bran and the husk that has the fiber are removed, leaving only the light yellow endosperm, which is virtually all starch with very little nutritional value and a high glycemic index rating.

Following that, in order to bypass the aging process and add shelf life, as well as keep the clean white color, the endosperm is crushed and treated with chlorides to make it instantly white. So there is not much left...

2. Heating

Another way the nutrients in food are destroyed is through heating. Various phytonutrients, enzymes, probiotics, and vitamins do no survive the heating process, which depletes the food of these life-promoting nutrients.

3. Irradiation

This process exposes food to radioactive materials, such as cesium-137 and cobalt-60, to kill insects, bacteria, molds, and fungi, prevent sprouting, and extend shelf life.

Unfortunately, foods that have been irradiated lose much of their nutritional value. Irradiation can destroy between 5 and 80 percent of vitamins and nutrients found in a variety of foods including essential vitamins A, B complex, C, E, and K. As an example, irradiated eggs lose 80 percent of vitamin A and orange juice loses 48 percent of beta-carotene.

Take care of you food, enjoy their healthiness.

Things That Can Wake You Up Better Than Coffee

The apple offers major benefits to the human body, but fruits in general are big, too. So, why apples you may ask? The benefits of an apple are amazing, since it contains fructose which is a natural sugar that can wake you up naturally and help keep you going. It also moves slowly through the body, reaching areas where you may not wake up immediately, but once an apple in your system it'll wake you up and keep you awake.

Coming from the cocoa bean, chocolate at least starts as something all natural. It's a fatty food, so it's not something you want to indulge in frequently. But if no coffee is present, a simple chocolate bar does have enough within to make you wake up. The moment you put chocolate in your body, it can give close to immediate comfort, but also drive up energy. It won't last for a very long time, but if you get moving once you eat or drink something with chocolate involved, chances are you're waking up pretty well.

Seems a bit obvious, I know. But, light has a way of, shall we say, annoying people in the morning. Whether you wake up to the bright sun or the light being cut on in your room, it may be a torturous way to get up, but it's guaranteed to get you up and keep you up.

Another one that may seem obvious, but is not used as often with Americans, is exercise. It's not as if you have to do a lot, but things like running in the morning, even if it's just around the block, not only can keep you healthy and fit, but it will wake your body up very well. Stretching can be a big help, or if you're feeling foggy, heading to the gym can get you going. But most of the time, you can get going right at home with no need for a gym membership. Really, it's all about the blood. When you get up and going you start to get the blood flowing throughout the entire body.

Some of you may be asking, "How can water wake me up?" Well, drinking one glass of water before bedtime will make you have to, well, get up to use the restroom. So, that's one way of course. But there are several other ways. The shower includes water, unless you live with Willy Wonka and have the best chocolate shower ever! However, what's most effective is being awakened by cold water being thrown on you by someone. That is a guarantee that you'll wake up. If we want to make it scientific, water has a lot of health benefits, too. Think about it, your body is made up mostly of water. You can last 3 weeks without any food but only 3 days without water, meaning it is important to the body daily. So, starting the day with a tall glass of water or bottle of water can really help the body.
