Simple Ways to Eat Healthy on a Budget ...

Unfortunately, the rising food prices make it hard to eat healthy. Your paycheck is most likely not rising as fast. Worst case you’re student which makes it even harder. These 10 tips will help you eat healthy on a budget.

1. Buy Whole Foods. Unprocessed foods are cheaper and more nutritious than processed foods. They also give you total control over the ingredients. Avoid anything that comes from a box 90% of the time.

 2. Buy Cheap Proteins. You need 1g protein per pound of body-weight per day to build and maintain muscle. Eating whole protein with each meal also helps fat loss as protein has a higher thermic effect than other foods. Keep the steaks & salmon for special occasions. Buy eggs, milk, whey, mackerel, tuna, calves liver, frozen chicken breast, cottage cheese, …

3. Buy Generic Food. And store brands. Raw foods like rice, pasta, eggs, milk, cottage cheese, frozen fruits/veggies, …

4. Buy Supplements. They’re cheap and make your life easier, however whole food is better. You can use supplements, but make sure the bulk of your diet consists of whole, unprocessed foods.

5. Buy in Bulk. Especially when you have promos running. Foods like pasta, rice and oats are easy to stockpile. If they’re on sale, buy as much as you can afford & store to last you until the next sale.

6. Buy In Season Fruits & Veggies. Food grown in season tastes better and is cheaper. Root vegetables in the Winter. Apples & squash in the Fall. Broccoli & berries in the Summer. To know the season of veggies and fruits check this article: Fruits & Veggies: When are they in season ?

Right Time To Rehydrate [Workout Tips]

You know how it feels to exercise in 90-degree heat if you skimped on water beforehand. Now, new research has quantified dehydration’s actual physical effect on performance and led to a new way to think about watering up pre-workout.

According to the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, for every 1% body mass you lose through sweat, your heart rate ticks up three beats a minute, which means it has to work harder. Not good. On the flip side, “staying hydrated helps hold in more water, so your heart has to work less to pump the blood to muscles,” says study author William Adams, M.S., A.T.C., so “keeping your heart rate low allows you to exercise with a higher intensity.”

Studies have found that athletes who lose as little as two percent of their body weight through sweating have a drop in blood volume, which causes the heart to work harder to circulate blood. A drop in blood volume may also lead to muscle cramps, dizziness, fatigue and even heat stroke

13 Easy Ways To Drink More Water Every Day

1. Set a specific goal for the day.

You can start by counting how many water you consume a day and set yourself a goal of the water you should be drinking.

2. Invest in a water bottle that you’ll actually use — and keep it close.

Make fun out of your water and buy a bottle you like, an Infuser Water Bottle for example, Hi-drate H2O Infuser Water Bottle is $20.99 available at Amazon.

3. Deadlines on a bottle.

An easy way to keep the goals, you can draw a line on the bottle with the hours of when you will drink water from your bottle.

I made this chart for my water bottle for at work. I have around one inch for every hour. (With a bit more for the noon hour for lunch) It helps remind me to drink my bottle by the end of the work day. I have to make sure th line is met by the end of the hour. I laminated it with packing tape and it is kept on the bottle by a black rubber band.

4. Use an app to track your progress.

Free apps like Waterlogged and Daily Water help track, store, and analyze your water consumption.

Great app to help remind you to drink more water every day in 2014 - and it's FREE!

5. Infuse your water with fruits, vegetables, or herbs.

Add flavor to your water with your favorite fruits, veggies or herbs like mint.

6. Get motivated

Motivate and inspire yourself to drink water by reading the benefits of it, blogs, or videos to stay hydrated.

7. Squeeze a drink into the daily routines you already have.

After your brush your teeth in the morning, or right before you eat lunch try drinking a glass full of water, this way you will just add more water drinking to your habits.

8. Use a straw.

You’ll drink more, and you’ll drink faster.

Many parents feel completely safe with their kids using GlassDharma glass straws!

9. Make a water wager.

Wrangle up friends or co-workers to join you — for example: make it a goal to drink at least five glasses during the workday — then set up shared calendar reminders to make sure you’re all on track.

10. Hydrate with water-based foods.

Cucumbers, salad greens, grapefruit, cantaloupe, water-based ice pops

12. Cut juice with sparkling water.

Spike them with sparkling water. Think of it as a makeshift alternative to soda — and a quick way to hydrate and satisfy your sweet tooth.

13. Switch things up with other H20-based beverages.

Like hot tea or unsweetened iced tea.

TOP 8 Fruits you should be eating ... Or drinking.

Blueberries

Blueberries are rich in antioxidants, which help fight cancer and prevent macular degeneration. Like cranberries, they contain compounds that can protect against urinary tract infections.

Apples

Eat the skin for a high dose of fiber -- both soluble (the type that helps lower cholesterol) and insoluble (it keeps you regular). In addition to meeting 15 percent of your daily fiber needs, an apple is crammed with antioxidants.

Bananas

High in potassium and low in sodium, bananas help lower your risk of high blood pressure and stroke. Bonus: Protease inhibitors that can prevent stomach ulcers.

Red & Purple Grapes

Red wine isn't the only source of resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant that could help fight heart disease. You get nearly as much resveratrol in a cup of dark-colored grapes as you do in a five-ounce glass of merlot.

Kiwis

Ounce for ounce, kiwis contain more than twice as much vitamin C as oranges, plus they may lower the risk of cataracts and could even protect DNA from damage.

Oranges

A single orange gives you almost a full day's vitamin C, plus potassium. The opaque membrane around each wedge has hesperidin, which may lower cholesterol. Even the scent is calming, according to research.

Papayas

These contain papain, a substance that helps improve your digestion. Papayas also provide a lot of vitamin C and are a good source of folate.

Strawberries

A daily handful helps control type 2 diabetes and stave off heart disease and inflammation. Strawberries are also an excellent source of vitamin C and other antioxidants.
