Foods People Think Are Healthy (But Aren't)

Agave Syrup

This is one I myself fell for. So many vegans and raw foodists rave about agave that I didn’t really stop and think it could be too good to be true. Agave is a super sweet liquid that is often touted as the “healthy” or “low GI” alternative to sugar. According to Dr Joseph Mercola, it’s hardly any better than high fructose corn syrup. It’s highly processed, and super high in fructose.

Soy

Soy milk and tofu are often considered healthy alternatives to meat and dairy. I’m not advocating meat or dairy, but in my opinion, soy is just as bad, if not worse. Organic fermented soy products are okay in small amounts, but the majority of the western world is under the idea that processed products like soy milk and tofu (which are also generally genetically modified) are good for us. Hundreds of epidemiological, clinical and laboratory studies link soy to: malnutrition, digestive distress, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders, infertility, birth defects, immune system breakdown, heart disease and cancer.

Fruit Juice

Because the fruit has been stripped of its fiber, it's converted straight into sugar as soon as it hits your mouth, and sends your blood sugar levels all woo-hoo. Of course the bottles of fruit juice you buy at the store are rubbish. Most people know that. But fruit juice you make yourself is also not that great because of the whole sugar thing.

Subway

It’s criminal that Subway is allowed to be marketed as a healthy option when it comes to food choices. The meat is processed, the sauces are full of sugar and other preservatives, and they sell junk food cookies and soft drinks as add-ons. There’s nothing healthy about Subway. Don’t believe me? Click here to see a list of what is actually in Subway’s food.

Hydrated Brain: Yes, your brain needs water.

Our brains depend on proper hydration to function optimally. Brain cells require a delicate balance between water and various elements to operate, and when you lose too much water, that balance is disrupted. Your brain cells lose efficiency.

The brain is one of the most important organs in your body to keep fueled. It is approximately 85 percent water and brain function depends on having abundant access to water.

Water gives the brain the electrical energy for all brain functions, including thought and memory processes.

Water is also needed for the brain's production of hormones and neurotransmitters. Nerve transmission requires one-half of all the brain’s energy.

One of the most fascinating aspects of neurons is that they store water in tiny balloon-like structures called vacuoles.  Water is essential for optimal brain health and function.  Water is necessary to maintain the tone of membranes for normal neurotransmission. It enhances circulation and aids in removing wastes. Water keeps the brain from overheating, which can cause cognitive decline and even damage.  This is one of the main reasons to encourage students to drink water during exercise. Dehydration most commonly occurs because children go long periods of time without drinking water.  When they are thirsty they often choose sweetened drinks instead of water.  By the time thirst is felt, there may be a loss of body weight up to 2% from water loss, and a 10% cognitive decline may be present. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, dizziness, poor concentration and reduced cognitive abilities.  Even mild levels of dehydration can impact school performance.

Children in classrooms can be given structured water breaks or encouragement to keep a water bottle at their desks to sip throughout the day to achieve the recommended intake of 8 glasses a day, with 4 consumed during the school day.

Stay hydrated and try drinking water, at least your 8 oz. You can try getting a reusable bottle, maybe an Infuser Water Bottle and take your water everywhere you go.

Live healthy, drink healthy.

Autumn, stay Hydrated

Well, summer is almost over and weather is easy to remember to stay hydrated during this hot season, we must not forget to stay hydrated during the Autumn too. We will still need our 8 cups of refreshing water every day. Here are some refreshing ways to stay hydrated during this Autumn and keep your brain focus on class.

As we have discussed before, disposable water bottles are not environment friendly so they are a terrible decision, long term speaking, to drink the water you need every week.

Recommendation: Get your own non-disposable water bottle and take it where you need to.
For people that doesn't like the taste of pure water, there's a great way to add flavor to the water, without using sugar. Using Infuser water bottles is an easy way to add the natural flavor to your beverage, you can do it daily without any additional effort and stay healthy, just put the fruit in the basket and add water.
